Two years ago I left the public high school system with full retirement. With Love 4 Teaching I am in position to enjoy my passion for teaching one on one. I get to know where my student is, in his learning, and build from there. I have been tutoring for the last two years with 5th graders to adults for chemistry, math, conversational English, reading, health, and physics. But I always enjoyed the small learning groups of 1-4. My goal for all my students is to build confidence and guide them to the growing ability to learn independently and successfully. My science background showed me the importance for understanding for themselves. They need pass classes and move ahead, but they should be remembering what they learn. It is critical to moving ahead in their future endeavors. I help them find strategies to think and solve problems for themselves.
I spent most of my first years in private schools with small classes for 5th-12th grade for all subjects. Besides my math and science expertise, I enjoyed teaching all subjects like history, English grammar, sports and exercise, and writing to the elementary students. I taught in the 5th and 6th grades for over ten years. After that I taught in Phoenix area public high schools in science and math. I taught in regular lab sciences and math classes, but also used online curriculum, virtual science interactive simulations, and educational video clips.
My college degree is in chemistry teaching. I love the subject. During my classroom teaching years, I took more courses in physics and chemistry teaching. I spent many summers learning more at NSTA workshops, Science Olympiad coaches’ training, and the electric power industry teacher programs for research in renewable energy. The ASU modeling science program gave me white boarding methods, scientific modeling starting with lab work instead of math formulas.
Some favorite memories were when my students and I played detective to see uses of science in daily life. For Science Olympiad we learned varied topics like bridge building, aquatic insects, the stars’ names and movements, and inventive creations like mousetrap cars. Environmental research and competitions were centered on energy conservation at home and the power grid, renewable electrical energy, water quality improvement using wetlands, solar-powered lawn trimmer and solar-powered boat construction.
Over the years, I am a memorable teacher because my students are challenged at their own levels and succeed. They find out that their learning is directly related to their daily world and future. They find motivation, appreciation, and success.
